Eye Care Eye Examinations

Eye Examinations

There is more to a healthy pair of eyes than just clear vision!

Even if you seem to have perfect eyesight, everyone should have their eyes examined at least every two years. An optometrist checks both the clarity and comfort of you eyes, as well as their general health. The front of your eyes will be examined for eye disease, followed by the inside of your eye as well. If an eye disease or general health disorder is detected the optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist or general medical practitioner.

Eye Care Digital Retinal Photography

Digital Retinal Photography

You can now check the health of your retina by having a photo taken of the back of your eye! Using this modern technology, the optometrist is able to analyse the photo to accurately assess the health of the eye and detect conditions such as Glaucoma, Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and High Cholesterol. This permanent record of your retina then allows for future comparison and early detection of any eye disease.

Eye Care Glaucoma Check

Glaucoma Checks

Glaucoma is a condition in which the nerve cells that transmit information from the eye to the brain become damaged. Glaucoma is often associated with the build-up of pressure in the eye. If untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness. Often you will not even be aware that you have glaucoma until it is too late. The optometrist looks at the nerve fibres at the back of the eye to diagnose glaucoma and also measures the pressure in the eye with a special instrument called a Tonometer. These tests are simple and painless.

Eye Care Cataract Assessments

Cataract Assessments

Cataracts are a cloudiness that forms in the lens of the eye. Most cataracts are a result of ageing and long term exposure to UV light. An examination by the optometrist using a special instrument called a slit lamp will reveal any cataracts that you may have.

Cataract surgery is now a relatively minor procedure. The surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specialised in eye surgery. The optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist if necessary.

Eye Care Diabetic Eye Examinations

Diabetic Eye Examinations

The main eye problems associated with diabetes are: focusing problems, cataract and diabetic retinopathy. Of these, diabetic retinopathy is the most serious as it can cause blindness. If you have diabetes, then you must have a yearly examination of your retina to rule out diabetic retinopathy. Springfield Lakes Eye Care has all the necessary equipment and expertise to easily detect any signs of this devastating eye disease.

If any serious diabetic retinopathy is found, you will be referred immediately to an ophthalmologist for treatment and your general practitioner will be notified.
